The theme of today's videos is storytelling and narratives. We looked at a few title sequence designs, as well as analyzed short films in their ability to introduce the characters and the story in such a short time.
The basic structure, especially if you are writing a short story, is a three step setup:
Put a man up on a tree -> create a hook, a drama, find a conflict for the protagonist
Throw rocks at him -> do something to the protagonist
Get him down -> solve the problem, show the steps to resolution
Another useful method is to show a journey, getting from A to B and hooking events onto to the journey. Or look through Fairy Tales and find archetypes, because we already easily relate to them. And yet another way is to show a "slice of life" story, sort of abstract without defined beginning or end. Think of how the character perceives the world, and convey the feeling.
